Eastern & Southern Africa Office (ESAO)
Since its establishment in August 2010, the International Food Policy Research Institute’s Eastern and Southern Africa Office (ESAO), based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, has been working to strengthen IFPRI's support to Africa’s programs and development actions in the eastern and southern Africa region. The focus of ESAO is on contributing to food security, poverty reduction, and improved livelihood for the people of the region by conducting research, capacity strengthening, and advocacy activities on natural resource management, productivity, and production along the value chain, with an emphasis on: knowledge management and advisory services; availability and access to inputs; access to output markets; health and nutrition; and social protection and risk management.
ESAO also engages in monitoring and evaluation, and the impact assessment of development projects as a way of providing lessons for project formulation and implementation to accelerate the development process in the region. ESAO’s activities are undertaken with cognizance of the pillars of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program (CAADP) which are: extending the area under sustainable land management and reliable water control systems; improving rural infrastructure and trade-related capacities for market access; increasing food supply, reducing hunger and improving responses to food emergency crises; and improving agriculture research, technology dissemination and adoption, and agricultural education.
